Nachito Herrera Foundation

The mission of Nachito Herrera Foundation (NHF) is to enhance and increase the cultural exchange of musicians and musical genres between Latin America and the United States, and to expose American audiences and its population to Latin American music and musicians through live performances in the United States, and recorded music. Nachito Herrera Foundation is an agent of change that bridges the differences between peoples and cultures through music.

NHF was formed in the State of Minnesota, and in 2014, IRS approved its 501 (c) status. The Board of Directors is already formed and began to work. Having thorough experience and understanding of the Cuban system, NHF is uniquely qualified to interact with organizations and government officials in Cuba.

Here are examples of some projects sponsored by NHF:

1. On May 18, 2013, Nachito Herrera and three professional Minnesota musicians performed at Cuba Disco Music Festival in Havana. Every year, Cuba Disco brings professional artists and musicians from all over the world to Havana to perform concerts, recording sessions and personal interactions. In addition to Mr. Herrera, Minnesota-based musicians Bruce Henry, Maurice Jacox, and Norah Long performed during the week-long festival with Cuban musicians, including National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, National Choir of Cuba and the newly formed Havana Jazz Social Club ensemble.

2. In addition to professional musicians, five students from the University of Minnesota also performed at Cuba Disco. This was the first student exchange with Cuba being sponsored by the Foundation.

3. Plans are underway for another trip to Cuba for Minnesota musicians for the Havana Jazz Festival in December 2014.

4. Between 2014 and 2015 the Foundation will co-sponsor U.S. tours by the Havana Social Club, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

5. NHF has already begun planning for further musician-student and faculty exchanges at the college level between the United States and Cuba.
